On September 11, 2021, on the beach in Tarkhovka (St. Petersburg), a youth environmental and educational campaign "Clean Coast" took place. The action brought together all those who are not indifferent to the state of the environment and interested in an ecological lifestyle.

The goal of the environmental action is to develop cooperation in the field of environmental protection, form the environmental responsibility of young people and support the environmental volunteer movement.

The organizer of the action was the Committee for Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety of the Government of St. Petersburg. The functions of the operator of the action "Clean Coast" are performed by the State Unitary Enterprise «Mineral".

The first action took place in 2014. Since then, traditionally "Clean Coast" was held in Russia - St. Petersburg, in Finland - Helsinki and Turku, in Estonia - Tallinn.

Every year the action becomes more interesting and informative and attracts more and more participants who strive to make a personal contribution to the preservation of the environment. The amount of collected waste is also growing. In 2015, the action was held in the Kronstadt region - then 100 bags of waste were collected. In 2016, the participants have already collected 170 bags of waste, and in the fall of 2020, in the same Kronstadt district on the coast of Kotlin Island, St. Petersburg residents cleaned up and removed more than 500 bags of garbage. More than 400 car tires were sent for processing. Coastal cleaning was organized with separate waste collection.

This year, the organizers have attracted international projects and environmentally friendly enterprises to participate. More than 40 teams took part in the action, representing the following organizations DHL, MTS, ROSTELECOM SVEZA, Intercontinental hotels, Ahlers, Vodokanal, Siemens, Russian Railways, as well as teams of other companies and leading universities.

The start of the action was given by Mr  Mikhail Petrov - First Deputy Head of the Administration of the Governor of St. Petersburg.

Guests of honor of the event were :

  • Mrs Sannamaaria VANAMO - General Consul – Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg

  • Mr Alexander Kuchaev - Acting Chairman - Committee on Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety

  • Mr Sergey Voronin - Deputy Chairman - Committee on Nature Management, Environmental Protection and Environmental Safety

  • Mr Maxim Balanev - Public Representative in St. Petersburg - Agency for Strategic Initiatives | Executive Director - St. Petersburg Business Development Fund | Expert of the LALAPETE project

An educational quest with 17 stations was organized for the participants of the action. Each station was dedicated to one of the goals of sustainable development. Representatives of the LALAPETE project of the South-East Finland – Russia Cross-Border Cooperation Program told the participants about the achievements of the goal of quality education and environmental awareness-raising. At the station of the project, participants solved an entertaining crossword puzzle, and also talked about environmental habits, without which the development of a green circular economy is impossible.

Cleaning of territories is one of the most important eco-habits. The participants of the action returned the purity to a part of the coast of the Gulf of Finland and carried out monitoring of marine litter according to the HELCOM method.

The implementation of environmental initiatives and projects is impossible without concrete actions that contribute to the preservation of natural wealth. In the final of the action, the best team was awarded the Governor's Cup "Clean Coast"
